What $100 a month actually built

The last 10 years of a $100 monthly plan in AMZN, month by month: the flat line is cash paid in ($12,100 total), the accent line is what the position was worth along the way — ending at $30,125. Every point is computed from that day's real close.

Why dollar-cost average into Amazon?

Amazon is the canonical patience story in our data: from the 1999 peak the stock fell roughly 94%, and it still ended up one of the great compounders of the era. Almost nobody held a 2000 lump sum through that crater. A monthly plan had a structural advantage — its heaviest accumulation happened at single-digit prices no one would have dared to time.

The 2022 rerun (about −56%) shows the pattern at smaller scale. What the chart cannot show is the fork where it goes the other way: plenty of 1999 e-commerce names fell 94% and never came back. The schedule earns you the average of a survivor's path — choosing a survivor remains your risk.

FAQ

Is DCA into Amazon worth it?

History, not opinion: $100 every month into AMZN for the last 10 years (121 buys, $12,100 invested) would be worth $30,125 today — +149% before fees and taxes. Past performance doesn't predict the future, but that's what the plan actually produced.

What if I had started at the worst possible time?

The worst 5-year monthly-DCA start in AMZN's history began Jan 2018 and finished at -21%. The best (Sep 2013) finished at +276%. DCA doesn't delete timing luck — it narrows it and removes the decision.

How is this different from buying AMZN once?

A lump sum bets everything on one entry price. Monthly DCA spreads your cost across AMZN's ups and downs — you buy more units when it's cheap, fewer when it's expensive. Compare both directly in our lump sum vs DCA calculator.

Where does the data come from?

Real AMZN daily closing prices from May 1997 to Jul 2026 (29.2 years), refreshed weekly and validated for gaps, zeros and staleness — see the data & methodology page. Fees, spreads and taxes are not modelled.
